Our talented para
equestrian athletes need your support.
Managed by Riding for
the Disabled Association Australia Limited (RDAA), the para equestrian program
provides financial support and coaching for Australia's top disabled
riders as they prepare for the Paralympic Games each 4 years.
RDAA provides a complete pathway
for its members. It conducts therapeutic horse riding,
recreational riding in RDA centres across Australia, State and National Sporting
competitions and International sporting opportunities for those to
ride at the top level. The Paralympic Preparation Program inspires participation
through all levels of the services provided to disabled riders.
Funding is provided by
the Australian Paralympic Committee for the coaching and training
of riders. However, to be competitive on the international stage our
team needs support from the broader community.
Long gone are the days when
Paralympic Equestrian Athletes rode horses selected from a "pool" of loaned horses
at the event. The competition has progressed to the point where in Australia, riders
with a disability
compete head-to-head with able bodied riders in open competition on
international standard horses.
Athletes with disabilities spend hours every day training to earn
a place on a Paralympic team or to attend a Paralympic training camp or clinic.
However, unlike other countries, Paralympic equestrian athletes in Australia
currently receive no personal funding and rely on the support of families,
communities, and sponsors to help defray expenses and purchase the equipment
they need to compete.
